Food Safety First Principles for Food Handlers certificate program provides food handlers with the knowledge and skills they need to safely handle foods for human consumption. Successful completion of the program assures food managers, regulators and trainers that the certificate holder has completed a basic course in food safety. The First Principles course is based on the on the principles and recommendations of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Food Code and is recommended for people involved in the preparation, handling, serving and displaying of food. The course is required by law in some states such as California and local jurisdictions and voluntary in others.
The First Principles program is the comprehensive answer for your food handler needs and covers the following areas.
- Introduction to Food Safety
- Contamination and Cross Contamination
- Time and Temperature Control
- Personal Hygiene
- Cleaning and Sanitizing
- Potentially Hazardous Foods/ Time Temperature Control PHF/TCS
- Pests
The Online Food Handler Certificate of Completion is self-paced and narrated. Most people complete the course in 1-2 hours. Once you register and pay for your course, you will have 30 days to complete it. There are 40 questions that test your knowledge of the subject material. You must answer at least 70% of the questions correctly to finish the course. This ensures that the material is being absorbed and adheres to the new California Food Handler (see below) requirements for online programs. Our unique program allows you to review and retake the assessment as many times as you need in order to achieve the 70% passing grade (within the 30 day subscription period). The ultimate goal is that you learn and retain the material. Your National Registry of Food Safety Professionals TM certificate of completion and ID card will be processed for mailing within 24 hours of completing the course. You will also have the option of printing a temporary certificate upon course completion.

California Food Safety Certification Notice:
The new law states that California food handlers hired prior to June 1, 2011 must obtain a food handler card on or before July 1, 2011. Food handlers hired on or after June 1, 2011 must obtain a food handler card within 30 days of the date of hire. Take this NRFSP online course to meet this requirement
